Amazon Pharmacy announced it will sell Novo Nordisk's recently FDA-cleared GLP-1 Wegovy pill for weight management with insurance and cash-pay options.

The Wegovy pill is meant to be used with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for adults with obesity, who are overweight or have weight-related medical issues.

The digital pharmacy will offer individuals with commercial insurance the pill for as little as $25 per one-month supply, and cash-paying customers can purchase it for $149 per month.

Individuals will be able to compare insurance versus cash-pay pricing, eligible coupons will be automatically applied at checkout, and patients nationwide can have the pill delivered to their home.

"Amazon Pharmacy is focused on making it easier for customers to access the latest innovations in weight loss care," Tanvi Patel, vice president and general manager of Amazon Pharmacy, said in a statement.

"By offering Wegovy through both insurance and a straightforward cash-pay option, we’re giving people more choice, greater transparency and fewer barriers to care."

THE LARGER TREND

In December, Novo Nordisk beat Eli Lilly to market with the first oral GLP-1 for weight loss in adults, after the FDA approved the Wegovy pill.

Novo Nordisk launched its Wegovy pill in the U.S. earlier this week and tapped a hybrid weight-inclusive primary and metabolic care provider, knownwell, as a NovoCare provider.

Boston-based knownwell offers virtual care and has established brick-and-mortar locations in Massachusetts, Texas, Illinois and Georgia. Through the collaboration, patients using Wegovy will have access to knownwell's offerings, including nutritional, medical and behavioral support.
